Services Provided

Breaking the Chain Foundation (BTC) provides mentoring, referral and sponsorship services to children who reside in the District of Columbia and have a parent or parents who are incarcerated (or under correctional supervision). BTC provides intense services to youth as well as connect families to a variety of referral services that exist throughout Washington, D.C. These services include, but are not limited to, referrals for Individual & Family Counseling.

BTC is initially focusing on Ward 8 -- often referred to as the "Forgotten City," the poorest ward in the Nation’s Capitol -- which is plagued by poverty, drug abuse and violence, and is recognized as having the highest incarceration rate in the city.

In the criminal justice system, little effort is made to identify which prisoners have children or to address the needs of their families. Recently, the Federal Administration for Children and Families awarded a grant to BTC to begin a mentoring program.
