BTC Mentoring Program


Mission Statement
Breaking the Chain Foundation^s Mentoring Program links youth between the ages of six and seventeen with caring adult mentors for the purpose of gaining necessary supports to navigate through difficult circumstances, make positive life choices, enhance commitments for academic success and build ambition toward achieving their personal goals.

Target Population
Youth between the ages of ten and fifteen who have no more than two juvenile offenses and who reside in Ward 8 of the District of Columbia. Youth must also have at least one primary/secondary caregiver who is incarcerated and is not in imminent danger of hurting him/herself or another person. 

Mentoring Location
As a community based program, mentors and mentees will be able to choose from a variety of prescribed activities when planning their meetings, but mentors and mentees may also be required to attend additional on-site workshops and training sessions.

Special Program Components
As a faith-based program, the mentoring program has a religious or spiritual base that mentors can use as part of developing their relationship with the younger person.

Program Goals

  1. Increase the youths’ feelings of connectedness to his/her school, community and family.
  2. Increase the youths’ commitment to education and academic performance.
  3. Reduce the likelihood of alcohol and/or drug use and abuse.
  4. Reduce the occurrence of delinquent behaviors.

Frequency and Duration of Contact

Mentors and mentees will meet for at least one hour per week for a minimum one year commitment.

MENTOR ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Undergo an extensive drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Undergo a psychological evaluation and an initial assessment.
  • Take part in quarterly evaluations.
  • Possess and/or utilize an independent means of transportation.
  • Make a minimum one year commitment.
  • Set aside at least one hour per week to meet with the mentee.
  • Attend on-going training sessions.
  • Attend Field Trips
  • Bi-monthly focus groups

  4. Complete fingerprinting and background investigation
  5. Drug Screen

  8. Copy of Car Insurance
  9. Copy of Divers License (ID)

MENTEE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend on-going discussion forums.
  • Participate in scheduled group field trips
  • Attend mandatory Life Skills Training
